Meet Me at the Met!

New York City is home to some of the best museums in the world. From the MET to the MOMA, the Whitney to the Guggenheim, there is something for everyone at our world renowned museums. But the best part of some of these museums? You can get in for free.

If you are a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch card holder, there is a free perk that goes widely unnoticed. Called the Museums on Us program, it offers free entrance to 150 museums nationwide during the first weekend of every month for each card holder. Just for being a customer this perk is awarded, though not talked about nearly enough. There’s nothing to sign up for and no dotted line; your card and a smile is all you’ll need, though sometimes additional proof of ID is requested, so the ticket seller knows you are the cardholder.

A listing of the 10 NYC based museums the participate in the Museums on Us program.

In addition to the MET being on the list, the Whitney and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum are part of the program. If it’s a rainy weekend and a trip out to Jersey City, NJ isn’t too much, the Liberty Science Center is also included.

So how to go about getting into the museum with this program? When you go to the ticket booth, ask for a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch ticket. The ticket seller may give you a knowing look before they print out your ticket, but print it out they will and then off to explore ancient treasures or modern art you go.

The famous MET staircase greets you as you enter the building.

We suggest using this perk as a way to see the museums at a slower pace -- instead of feeling like every exhibit has to be seen in one day, getting in free each month takes that pressure off. You can leisurely stroll through as you admire an exhibit or two, then stop for a coffee at one of the museum cafes.

Each museum lists the current exhibits that are on display on their websites, though keep in mind that the Museums on Us program doesn’t include the special features or programs. For those, you’ll still need to purchase an additional ticket to that featured exhibit. But if you’re content with strolling through the modern masters or wandering around ancient statues, the Museums on Us program will fulfill your culture longing.

The new Whitney Museum is located near The High Line.

Remember that the Whitney Museum’s new location is right next to The High Line, so you can take a tour of some modern art followed by a stroll through the lovely garden. If that works up your appetite, keep in mind that theChelsea Market is at the end of The High Line and they have an excellent food selection for every discerning taste.

The next weekend when the Museums on Us perk is available is over the weekend of June 4th and 5th -- see you there!
