Take a Date to the Metrograph

The Metrograph at 7 Ludlow Street in Chinatown is the movie theater we’ve all been dreaming of finding. Tucked away in an unassuming brick building, this gem of cinematic magic not only shows the indie films you’ve been dying to see but also has a restaurant, a bookstore, a liquore license for two bars, and if that isn’t enough -- gourmet popcorn.

Having opened earlier this year, the Metrograph is in its infancy as a New York City institution, but it is quickly establishing itself as one of the best movie houses in Manhattan. Actor Michael Cera and comedian Chelsea Handler are  just two of the creatives  who will be on-hand at the movie theater this month. The varied and eclectic schedule of showings is bound to lure you in. If a showing of Truth or Dare, the Madonna flick from 1991 isn’t what you are looking for then perhaps Suspicion or To Catch a Thief, both classic Hitchcock films, will be more your speed.

The Metrograph’s exterior belies the wonders inside.

The theater is currently running a series now until December 31st called,  “Welcome to Metrograph: A to Z”  which is a collection of films that the curators think everyone should see. Since this retrospective started July 1st, Metrograph has listed all the previously screened movies so you can catch up, if you so desire.

The Metrograph’s restaurant is located right above the theater and overlooks the entrance to the screens. It boasts an  extensive menu  that includes steak tartare along with mac & cheese. It’s open 7 days a week and while you may not need a reservation, you’re able to make one if you’d like to sit for dinner before or after a show, when the restaurant would be busier.

The Metrograph’s restaurant is on the second level and has an impressive menu.

But - we can assure you that if you sample the Metrograph’s gourmet popcorn selection, you may be able to skip dinner. The turmeric and olive oil popcorn is fantastic and there are more others options that include sea salt if you want a more traditional treat. The craft bottled sodas that Metrograph offers compliment the other treats available for sale (including Pocky sticks) and the ambiance of the concession area is unrivaled by anything else in Manhattan.

The concession at the Metrograph invites you to browse the delicious treats.

The bookstore of the Metrograph occupies a corner of the theater. If you long for books on movies, this is your spot. The bookstore is packed with new editions of books and movie journals alongside first editions. It’s a great place to browse while you wait for your movie’s showing or to wander through after dinner. It’s anyone's guess what kind of gems you’ll find tucked away here.

Having just opened this year, the Metrograph will need a bit more time to build up its reputation as a New York City institution like the Angelika Film Center. But with its diverse film offerings and the accompanying ambiance we have no doubt that it will find itself listed among the best theaters in Manhattan and a wonderful place to bring a date.
